It’s easy to see why everyone wants to be a DJ. It’s a life filled with bottle service, bass and beautiful people. Not to mention all these EDM DJ’s are making serious bank! Whether it’s for the love of the music or for the taste of fame and fortune, thousand of kids around the world have the DJ bug. You’ve taken the DJ Master Course so what’s next? You’re going to need beginner DJ equipment.
Beginner DJ Equipment – Getting Started
When I learnt to DJ, it was by messing around with vinyl on my dad’s Technics. Today, things are a little different and there are all types of beginner DJ equipment to get started on. To make it a little less daunting we’ve compiled the best budget-conscious beginner DJ equipment that will have you rocking it out in no time.
Virtual DJ
Virtual DJ is free DJ software (home edition) made by Atomix productions that allows you to mix songs without any hardware whatsoever. If you have a computer you have everything you need to get started with it right now. While more complex programs like Serato and Traktor may give you a greater feature set, Virtual DJ is the only application of its kind that was designed specifically with beginners in mind rather than being tailored towards experienced DJ’s looking to go digital. When it comes to great value beginner DJ equipment, there’s no better place to start than Virtual DJ.
iPad + Traktor DJ
Mobile devices are a part of daily life for most people today, so it was only natural that eventually we’d find ways to DJ off them. There are already a few apps available that allow you to mix tracks on a phone, but my personal favorite is Native Instruments’ Traktor DJ. It’s only iPad compatible at the moment, which is a deal-breaker for some, but if you’ve got the tech to run it it’s definitely worth a look. It’s designed to be easy enough to be a solid piece of beginner DJ equipment but also be powerful enough to let you execute more advanced moves as your skills improve. Traktor DJ is available in the App Store for $9.99.
Hardware DJ Controllers
So you’ve been experimenting with few DJ programs and now you’re ready to move into the world of hardware. A club style Pioneer CDJ setup will cost you thousands of dollars, but there are plenty of controllers designed to be great beginner DJ equipment. Pioneer’s DJ controller lines both make control surfaces that are made specifically to get new DJ’s started in no time. Make no mistake, despite the low price tag, they’re very powerful pieces of DJ equipment.
If you’re willing to spend a little more, the Novation Twitch is one that I’ve become quite attached to. It trades in space consuming platters for two multi-touch strips that allow you to nudge, scratch and seek through tracks by touch. This makes it compact and lightweight, so much so that I often throw it in a backpack and take it with me to parties just in case.
Getting started as a DJ may seem like it requires deep pockets, but today, with the right motivation, it’s totally possible to start DJing immediately. Our very own DJ Master Course comes with all the tools to have you mixing music like a pro in no time. So, the DJ lifestyle you’ve dreamed of may be a lot closer than you once thought.
