From Ricardo Villalobos to Sven Vath, Richie Hawtin to Speedy J. Ibiza, professional techno DJs are masters of their craft, riding trends and changes in the world techno scene from underground warehouse parties in the nineties to huge festivals today. In this article we cover exactly what it takes to make the leap from bedroom to professional DJ.
Never stop learning, practicing and discovering
One thing that all professional DJs have in common is that they never stop. They never stop learning, they never stop practicing, they never stop digging for new music. And they never stop experimenting and trying new things. In any creative work, stagnation is pretty much a flatline. Even those at the top of the game are always looking at ways to improve and strive for perfection. In any field, those at the top stay at the top for a good reason. Those who don't are quickly overrun by those who are climbing harder and faster.
Never give up
The best professional DJs have a few other things in common, too. Firstly, they all started where you are. Bedroom mixing, small house parties, opening sets in clubs. Determination and grit got them to where they are today. They have never given up and have made music their passion as well as their career. It can be a risky endeavour, but hard work and perseverance pay off in any career path.
Understand the music
The most successful DJs are also fine musicians who have well-honed music production skills. Most DJs who stand out from the crowd are those who, after learning the fundamentals of mixing techno, have gone on to spend some time making their own techno music. They also often remix and edit others songs and have a fundamental understanding of how music works – from music theory to melody construction and chord structure.
Surround yourself with likeminded people
Also, being surrounded by other people who are on the same path as you, with common interests and goals, is absolutely essential to success in any form. Any aspiring techno DJ looking to reach professional status should hang out at the local clubs, meet other DJs and share music, ideas and some drinks. As well as being good for creativity, this sort of networking is a great way to get gigs and get those pumping mixes heard by a dance-floor’s eager ears!
